This photo was taken in the late spring of 1888 (other photos from this collection show buckeyes blooming) by well-known western photographer Carlton Watkins in what is now the town of El Verano. The landscape is oak savannah planted in hay, which the farmer is harvesting. Hay in the foreground has already been cut.
